City Declares Water Emergency Over

Officials in Windsor, California, have declared an end to the water shortage emergency which began last summer. Water conservation measures were mandated in July as a result of a state order for the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) to reduce the amount of water it pumps from the Russian River by 25%.

The Water Agency supplies more than 600,000 residents in Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Cotati, Sonoma, Windsor and north Marin County. Some of these other cities had earlier repealed their water shortage emergency orders.

The city of Windsor is entirely reliant on water from the Russian River. Windsor achieved a 20% reduction in water usage by implementing extensive use of recycled water to irrigate more than 450 homes, golf courses and city parks.

As a result of conservation measures, and extensive use of recycled water, SCWA and its contractors were able to reduce overall water use by 30%.
