Payday turned out to be a rough day for one employer from Wilmington, North Carolina, and his employee. Police say John Gatewood was apparently upset with how much he got paid for his work with a local landscape company.

After receiving his check, Gatewood went home, but then returned to where his employer, Kenneth McDade of Manale Landscaping, was putting landscape equipment into a storage unit. Gatewood went into McDade's vehicle and took his car keys, obtained a shovel and swung it at McDade.

According to police, the shovel apparently broke and Gatewood threatened to kill his boss with the broken end. He then forced McDade to go to a nearby ATM and get more money. Gatewood is also accused of taking money from the victim's pocket.

He’s charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats, breaking/entering a motor vehicle and larceny from a motor vehicle. He's being held under a $100,000 bond.
