Snappy Landscaping's Octavio Herrera, 61, was mowing a customer’s lawn in Phoenix, Arizona, when he was struck by a pickup truck. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and underwent eight hours of brain surgery in an attempt to save his life.

Jose Angel Gonzalez, 17, was street racing Esteban Chavez, Jr., 16, when the teenager's car ran a stop sign. Gonzalez allegedly blew through the stop sign and hit the pickup truck. The truck and its driver were sent crashing through a block wall, hitting Herrera.

Police tracked down Chavez and his two passengers at a school in the area. He had driven his vehicle home after the accident and exchanged it for another car before he went to school.

The accident touched off a five-vehicle collision, in which Herrera subsequently died.
