Landscape contractors in New York got a big scare recently, when a rumor began to circulate that all riding lawn mowers had to undergo mandatory inspections by August 15. If the mowers were not inspected by that time, the rumor went, their owners would face fines or possible seizure of the equipment. The good news is, it was all a hoax.

The claim began as an email. After a few people received the message, however, word got out and the rumor spread like wildfire. But no news or government sources have reported any upcoming inspection laws or policies.

“We are unaware of any bill being passed by the state legislature that would require the inspection and/or registration of lawn mowers,” a New York Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman said.
