As a sign of what the industry could look like in coming years, the city of Columbia, Missouri, has opened up applications for its award program for environmentally-sound landscapes. Dubbed the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement Award Program, it highlights businesses and organizations that excel and innovate in environmental sustainability and responsibility.

Four categories exist for nominees. Environmental stewardship encompasses sustainable land use and active land protection, specifically looking for more sustainable landscapes, rain gardens, permeable surfaces and natural wildlife certification. Innovative best practices awards new methods in sustainability. Pollution prevention awards go to institutions that reduce their carbon footprints. Resource conservation recognizes the reduction, reuse or recycling of natural resources.
