A landscape contractor has been sentenced to a year in jail for bilking an elderly, mentally impaired man out of $100,000 in The Villages, Florida. The contractor, Brian Stanley Pacific, who owns a local landscape company, plead no contest to charges of grand theft and exploitation of the elderly.

Police said this wasn’t the first time Pacific had exploited the elderly in Florida. Authorities in Palm Beach County have an arrest warrant for him over failing to appear to answer for similar charges.

Pacific met the man through door-to-door solicitation in April 2012. They made an oral agreement for Pacific’s services. However, according to local investigators, as well as the man’s family and neighbors, only minimal work was ever performed, not enough to justify the fees paid.

Pacific was said to periodically return to the man’s home, saying that he had completed the work and was owed money. Authorities say that the homeowner showed signs of cognitive degeneration and organic brain damage, making him unable to realize he was paying an exorbitant amount of money every week.
