Police in Porterville, California, are looking for whoever shot and killed a member of a local landscape crew, who was performing property maintenance at the time. According to witnesses, two males approached the landscape crew of three and opened fire, killing Nelso Martinez, 25.
Allegedly carrying an AR-15 assault rifle, the men walked onto the property and began shooting at the crew. Investigators believe that six to eight shots were fired, but only Martinez was hit.
After the shooting, the gunman and his accomplice reportedly walked south onto a dirt road. Sheriff's deputies deployed aircraft and K-9 units to search for the suspects, but they were unable to locate the men.
While a motive is unclear, investigators believe that the shooting was planned. As to why Martinez was shot, a local official said, “It's possible he wasn't the intended target.”
According to authorities, Martinez had no gang ties or apparent involvement in criminal activities. “He was just a hard-working man in a common-law marriage with children.”
