A quality landscape, an outdoor living area and well-maintained grounds can pay dividends for home sellers trying to woo potential buyers.
“Anyone wanting to sell his house needs to remember that buyers look at homes two different ways. One way is, ‘What will I have to do when I purchase this home?’ The other is by asking, ‘What will I get to enjoy if I purchase this house?’” said Ashton Gustafson with Bishop Realty in Wichita Falls, Texas. Gustafson specializes in working with sellers.
Lawn, landscaping, patios and decks can all add to the enjoyable side of that equation, and figures from the recently released report from the National Association of Realtors back that up. The 2016 Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features notes that a beautiful lawn is especially effective at reaping rewards. For every dollar a homeowner spends maintaining their lawn, they get $3 in return when the home sells, on average.
Outdoor features, like patios and wood decks, also can be good investments. The report found that those features, newly installed, are expected to recoup their costs, on average. Of course, any improvements to a homeowners’ landscape can provide value, even for homeowners who aren’t intent on selling.
