The Des Moines Metro Wastewater Reclamation Facility has begun offering its treated wastewater to area suburbs to use for irrigating the landscape. The wastewater normally is discharged into the Des Moines River.

The facility received approval from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to make the water available for irrigation use by metro-area suburbs, “in light of this summer’s persistent drought,” said Larry Hare, operations manager for the wastewater reclamation facility. “The move should help municipalities in their efforts to cut down on water use.”

Treated wastewater that’s distributed to cities will receive additional chlorination and monitoring by staff, Hare said.
