Founded in 2016 by Tory Schwope, DCA Outdoor Inc., in Kansas City, Missouri, has seen some exceptional growth. They have acquired eight different green industry brands in the Kansas City area in less than a year.

Despite owning a very new company, Schwope has been a part of the green industry since he was young. As a boy, he watched his father and uncle operate a tree farm. One day, he knew, he was going to be in the nursery business.

“My dad was a really, really hard worker, and he worked out on the farm almost all of the time,” said Schwope. “So that’s what I was wired to think was cool as a kid.”

However, it was Schwope’s business savvy rather than green thumb that grew his company. One of his own start-ups, Schwope Brothers Tree Farms, was spared by the recession by his quick thinking. Rather than filing for bankruptcy or slashing prices as low as possible, he expanded production, going from 6,000 trees a year to 9,000.

“I knew there would be a pretty dramatic production shortage,” Schwope said, “so I wanted to be able to increase my production. I knew someday the economy would get better.”

And when it did, Schwope was in a prime position to start acquiring. Now, DCA has spread throughout five states, with more than 400 employees working in its various businesses. But Schwope still plans to more acquisitions.

“Size isn’t important,” he said. “But we want to take opportunities that are good for our business.”
