Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Connecticut, in partnership with BrightView Landscapes, Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, created a Remembrance Garden to honor the memory of the four alumni educators who were lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting happened on December 14, 2012, in Newton, Connecticut. The gunman killed 20 children and six staff members.

Carlene Barnes, a 2013 graduate, created a conceptual design for the memorial that was selected in a competition. Barnes and the university staff teamed up with Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio in Vermont to complete the design, according to BrightView.

BrightView provided donated materials and philanthropic support over an eight-month process.
