New fuel additive protects small engines

The formula is said to clean out deposits and prevent corrosion caused by ethanol.
Chevron Products Co., San Ramon, California, a division of Chevron USA Inc., and a provider of aftermarket fuel additives, engine oils, lubricants, coolants and related products, has announced the retail rollout of its new Techron Protection Plus Powersports and Small Engine Fuel System Treatment.
The company says that, following extensive development and testing, this small-engine additive both protects and cleans. It restores power and performance while optimizing fuel efficiency as it cleans fuel injectors, combustion chambers, throttle bodies and carburetors. Test data have shown that it also protects drivetrain components against corrosion.
The additive’s detergents are said to minimize cold-start problems and deposit-related knock and ping by removing carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. It’s supposed to dissolve and prevent intake-valve deposits for smoother idling and enhanced throttle response, as well as clean and control gum and varnish buildup in fuel systems.
Chevron says the product was developed to perform in the most severe operating environments. The additive’s alcohol- and emulsifier-free formula does not contribute to water uptake.
The company recommends using it in all gasoline engines, including carbureted, two- and four-stroke, port- or electronic fuel-injected models. It’s said to be ideal for ethanol-free gasoline, but it can also fight off harmful effects that engines can suffer from being exposed to ethanol-blended fuels up to E85.
The additive has been engineered for use in everything from gasoline-powered motorcycles to a wide range of portable outdoor power equipment used in lawn care, construction, agriculture, turf management, forestry and other industries.
Small engine applications include blowers, chain saws, drills, generators, lawn mowers, lawn tractors, power washers, pumps, saws, snow blowers, shredders, sprayers, tillers, trimmers and vacuums, Power sports applications include, but are not limited to, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, karts, scooters, snowmobiles and watercraft.
“Techron is committed to developing superior fuel additives for all internal-combustion engines,” says Joe DeFina, Chevron North America’s fuel additives business manager. “Our industry research revealed a distinct need for a more powerful solution in the power sports and small engine markets.”
“As a result,” DeFina continues, “we engineered the most comprehensive, high-performance fuel additive and tested it in the harshest environments. Our treatment combines ultimate protection with the cleaning power of the Techron brand.”
One ounce of the formula will treat 4 gallons of fuel. The product is offered in three package sizes: 4-ounce bottles that will treat up to 16 gallons of fuel; 10-ounce bottles that will treat 40 gallons of fuel and a value-sized, 1-gallon jug that will treat 512 gallons of fuel. It’s claimed that the product stabilizes fuel for up 24 months.Techron Protection Plus Powersports & Small Engine Fuel System Treatment is available at AutoZone stores nationwide and at AutoZone.com, Walmart.com and Amazon.com with additional retailers to be announced in the coming months.
